As NYFW is approaching, I figured I’d re-cap on some tips I’ve learned from the last time i went to NYFW and share it with you guys. I am sure you all had a fantasy of attending NYFW at some point in your life especially if you are a fashion and style blogger. I always wished to have that Carrie Bradshaw moment of being at fashion week with a whole bunch of girls and let me tell you it’s totally possible! As a blogger, you have more power than you think, even if you are just a tiny one:) And i am here to show you how you can use all you have got to your advantage, and ultimately attend NYFW.
How to attend NYFW and get invites to the shows
Begin the process by familiarizing yourself with the designers on the schedule. Whether it be reading about them in magazines, or following them on social media, begin interacting with the brand. I for one found a great resource in Modemonline, This site has everything you need to know about the fashion show schedule, press, and showroom contacts. In Addition NYFW’s own website is a great resource as well. You can also track down brands and contacts through LinkedIn, which i did a lot or browse through the internet to see if you can find a brand representative or PR Agency contact. The most invites i received came actually from PR agencies who sometimes represent more than one brand and can give you multiple invites.
My Tip: Create an Excel Sheet and enter all information you could find neatly into a file containing the brand name, contact info, representative, comments etc. This is also great for the next time you want to attend NYFW.
Now that you gathered your information you can start requesting invites. In the fashion industry, timing is everything. The general time limit to begin contacting PR companies is within 2-3 weeks of the show. My tip: Apply to ALL shows! Give it a shot! There are 100s of shows occurring throughout the small period of fashion week and you will most likely be rejected by some, so the more requests you send out the more invites you might get. (I probably sent around 200 emails, not kidding) However; be realistic! Do not waste your time contacting major brands since the only way to get in there is if you are from the press, magazines or a celebrity. Choose emerging brands which might want to get exposure and more buzz.
What to write
Type up an email that can be generalized and sent to multiple brands, so you do not have to type up a new email to every brand. Keep it short and simple! These people are getting hundreds, if not thousands of emails asking for access to the show, you better make yourself stand out! Tell them a bit about you, your blog and how they can benefit from having you at their show. I wold add any previous coverage you might have had. If you already have a great following give them your social stats or even better attach a media kit if you have one.
Talk to friends on the same path! It is all about who you know. Perhaps your friend has a connection with a designer or a news source you were unfamiliar with. If you know of somebody working in big fashion houses, ask them if they can get you an access pass. Literally use any lead you may have. In addition, remember those annoying PR emails you get that are usually filled with information about some product you may or may not care about, well that PR girl might work for a PR agency that represents a brand.
My Tip: If you’re a fellow beauty blogger, start by reaching out to PR companies that represent a beauty brand and check to see if they will be sponsoring any of the shows during NYFW. Read this post about how to get beauty brands to collab with you. I received many invites through beauty brands since they sometimes do the makeup or hair for the shows. If you’re already backstage, you might be lucky and be able to attend the show.
Let’s just say you have not received any invites prior to the show, so now what do you do? You can either reach out small magazines, websites and blogs that you admire and volunteer to cover the shows for them. Send a follow-up email and ask for just a backstage access, which is great fun as well and sometimes more easily provided. Furthermore, you can also just go to where the shows are happening ( usually at Skylight Clarkson Sq ) and stand outside, you might get lucky and get access by just being at the right place at the right moment. ( This happened many times to people i know!)
If ALL ELSE FAILS…
Lastly, even if scoring a Fashion Week invite proved to be mission impossible this season, you can still have a great experience by attending other events during NYFW. There are many event invites you can score as a blogger like the LiketoKnowit party by reward style which you can request from your reward style representative. Shopstyle and many other cool brands host parties that are totally worth going just to connect to other bloggers, stylists and mingle with fashion minded people.
My Tip: Connect to friends and bloggers who you know attend NYFW, since they might not be able to go to every show as planned and might give you their access pass. (I happened to just arrived from an overseas flight the week of fashion week and was simply too drained to attend all shows i got invited to, therefore i gave alot of them away to friends)
If you want to be a part of my blogger friends and community, shoot me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and i will invite you. A bunch of girls i know are attending NYFW this month and you can exchange tips and advice.
